CRUI meets EUA

July 17th, Rome. The CRUI meets the European University Association: a one-day event split into two important sessions.

In the morning, the President of the EUA, Josep M. Garrell, accompanied by Prof. Maurizio Tira, member of the EUA Board, meets with the CRUI General Assembly to present the Association's main activities and the new Work Plan, projects, and services for its members. This is also an opportunity to discuss the EUA's added value in promoting academic and scientific policies within the European Union and the European Commission. Professor Tira will outline the role and work of the EUA Council for Doctoral Education.

In the afternoon, a seminar organized with the EUA is held on the topic of university financing, in a European comparison perspective: “Financially sustainable universities: State of play and strategies for future resilience”.

Financially sustainable universities: state of play and strategies for future resilience.

In 2024 the EUA conducted a large-scale survey on the financial sustainability of universities, gathering insights from institutions across Europe. The final report, published in April 2025, offers an update on the state of university finances and sheds light on the need for institutions to prepare for a “new normal” of instability, reinforcing the need for strategic planning.

Taken by 168 institutions from 34 European countries, the survey provides a wealth of data that EUA is sharing in a series of dedicated briefings. The response rate for Italy was significant enough to organise a focused analysis to compare responses received from Italian universities to the complete dataset.

A dedicated seminar is scheduled on July 17th at the CRUI premises and is coordinated by Laura Ramaciotti, the CRUI Delegate for Budget Affairs, and opened by the EUA President, Josep M. Garrell, and the CRUI President, Giovanna Iannantuoni. The main topic is introduced by Thomas Estermann, EUA Director of Governance, Funding and Public Policy Development Unit, and is discussed with Roberto Di Pietra, Rector of the University of Siena and Full Professor in Accounting and Business Administration and Alberto Scuttari, President of the Italian Association of University Administration General Directors (CODAU).

The seminar is mainly addressed to the CRUI Rectors, the CRUI Delegate for Budget and the Directors General, and can be followed also online.
